Where access control makes the most difference
A good access control system solves real problems for property managers, boards and business owners. Most of our access control installation work in Chicago falls into a few patterns:
- Condo / HOA main doors. Replacing old keys and code locks with key fob and card access systems — proper audit trail, simple resident management.
- Garage and parking gates. Controlling vehicle access with fobs, long-range readers or keypads, and integrating with pedestrian doors.
- Office and small business entries. Securing front and back doors, loading areas and interior doors such as IT rooms or storage.
- Elevator access control. Limiting which floors residents, staff or vendors can reach where the building requires it.
What we include in a typical system
- Site visit and hardware choice. We walk the property, review existing wiring and door hardware, and pick controllers, readers and credentials that fit your situation – fobs, cards, mobile, or biometric access control where a server room or medical office justifies it.
- Door hardware and wiring. Electric strikes and maglocks, REX buttons, door contacts, clean cabling and labeled terminations.
- Controller programming. Schedules, access levels, holidays and visitor workflows are set up for real usage, not just left at defaults.
- Credential management. We show you how to add and remove fobs, cards or mobile credentials, and help you organize residents, tenants and staff.
What access control usually looks like in an HOA building
After years of these projects in Chicago, a fairly standard pattern has settled in. Readers go on all building entries — front door, side and service doors, the pedestrian doors into the garage, and the doors that lead from the garage into the building itself. Residents carry the same fob or mobile credential for all of them, and the board gets one audit trail.
The garage gets its own treatment. For vehicle entry we install long-range UHF readers (we usually use Control iD) that read a small tag on the windshield, so residents just drive up and the gate opens. The exit side does not need a reader at all — a motion or loop sensor is enough, since controlling who leaves is rarely the point.
Elevators are the piece boards ask about most. The practical setup is a reader at the ground-floor elevator lobby and on the garage side, so nobody can call the elevator or walk into the elevator lobby from the garage without a fob. Floor-by-floor control — where a tenant's fob only works for their own floor — is something we usually talk boards out of. It is hotel-grade complexity, and in a residential building it mostly generates service calls and annoyed guests.
For sizing: 8–12 readers is a solid base level for a typical Chicago multifamily building, and it covers everything above. Bigger properties scale up from there — our largest HOA system runs 64 doors and 9 elevators, on the same platform and the same credentials as the small ones.
