This is the reader we put on most Brivo doors in Chicago: main entrances, amenity rooms, office suites. It operates on 13.56 MHz — the main frequency for the whole Brivo smart line — and reads encrypted smart cards and fobs alongside phones running Brivo Mobile Pass. The single-gang body mounts on a standard electrical box, which is exactly where most old readers already sit, so swaps rarely touch the wall.

Why 13.56 MHz is the frequency that matters
Access credentials live on two radio frequencies, and the difference determines how easily a credential can be forged. The old standard, 125 kHz prox, sends its card number in the clear — any key-copying kiosk can duplicate one in a minute, which is why those cards still open so many buildings they should not. The 13.56 MHz smart credentials this reader uses are encrypted and authenticate in both directions: the card proves itself to the reader and the reader proves itself to the card. A copied number is useless.
On 13.56 MHz this reader takes Brivo’s EV3 smart fobs and cards, and over Bluetooth it takes phones with Brivo Mobile Pass — including the in-app Magic Button and opening by touching the reader’s logo with an authorized phone nearby. What it deliberately does not read is legacy 125 kHz prox. If your building still has a drawer full of those cards, start with the tri-technology B-BSPSF instead and migrate at your own pace.
The single-gang advantage on swaps
Single-gang means the footprint of a standard US electrical box — the same box most legacy readers and keypads were mounted on decades ago. On takeover projects we usually remove the old reader and land the new wiring on the B-BSSF, with no patching, repainting or new cutouts.
The housing is sealed against rain and dust, so the same model serves the heated lobby and the courtyard gate. Every read answers with an LED and a beep, Bluetooth activity has its own indicator, and the mounting uses an anti-tamper screw that an ordinary screwdriver cannot turn.

B-BSSF-B is black, B-BSSF-W is white — and that is the entire difference. Same radios, same sealing, same 5-year warranty, same $349 MSRP. Both connect to Brivo panels over OSDP, and both drop into Wiegand mode when a third-party controller runs the door, so the reader can outlive the panel behind it.

Will it read my building’s old prox cards?
No — this is a dual-technology reader: 13.56 MHz smart credentials and Bluetooth phones. For legacy 125 kHz prox cards you want the tri-technology B-BSPSF, which reads all three.
Can it be installed outdoors?
Yes. The housing is sealed against rain and dust, and we install the same model indoors and out across Chicago.
Does it work with non-Brivo panels?
Yes — in Wiegand mode it connects to third-party controllers. On Brivo panels it runs OSDP, which also enables the Bluetooth entry features.
