Product overview and installer notes

Net2 Plus is a one-door controller from Paxton’s Net2 platform, and its appeal is blunt: the hardware is bought once and there is no monthly bill after that. One board runs one door. The first board takes a network drop; every board after it can join over a two-wire RS485 daisy chain, so a building adds doors at its own pace — this year the lobby, next year the garage. The platform has been in the field long enough that we routinely take over systems installed by companies that no longer exist, and the boards still run. It is not locked to its own readers either: alongside Paxton’s P50 and KP75 it accepts HID or Brivo readers in Wiegand mode, and with HID readers the system takes SEOS cards, a credential that resists cloning. Management happens in Net2 software on a Windows PC in the building — functional, stable, updated when you choose. No cloud dependency, no license fees, no subscriptions.

One board per door, and doors added by daisy chain

The architecture takes one sentence to explain: each Net2 Plus board runs a single door — its reader, lock, exit button and door contact. The first board connects to the building network through its onboard TCP/IP port. The boards that come later do not each need a network drop; they hang off the first one over RS485, a two-wire run from panel to panel.

That daisy chain is what makes the system easy to grow. Adding a door means adding a board, not redesigning anything, and Paxton allows up to 200 networked units in one installation — far more than any property we service will use. We quote the bare board (682-493-US) where an enclosure already exists; for new work it usually goes into Paxton’s US metal enclosure with a 12/24V supply (682-610-US), or the PoE+ version (682-630-US) when the controller and lock should run off a single PoE+ switch port. Why installers call it time-tested

A large share of our Paxton calls are takeovers: a building changes management, the old security company is gone, and in the telecom closet sits a row of Net2 boards that have been switching door strikes the whole time. That is the reputation the platform earned in the field — the electronics run for years, and failures are rare enough that we remember them individually.

Reliability is also in how the board behaves when things around it fail. Every access decision is made locally on the panel, so a dead office PC or a network outage does not stop the doors — entries keep being granted and denied per the schedule already loaded. The board buffers 2,500+ events while offline and reports them back when the link returns, and its data survives a total power loss for up to 30 days.

Readers: Paxton’s own, or HID and Brivo over Wiegand

Each board has two reader ports and speaks more than Paxton’s native protocol: clock-and-data and Wiegand are both supported, in 26-bit and custom formats up to 50 bits. The usual pairing is Paxton’s P50 proximity reader on standard doors and the KP75 keypad where a PIN or card-plus-PIN policy is wanted. But the panel is not tied to them — HID readers and Brivo readers wired in Wiegand mode work as well.

Where copied fobs are a concern, the pairing we recommend is Net2 Plus with HID readers and SEOS cards. SEOS is an encrypted credential: unlike classic 125 kHz prox, it does not give up its data to the cheap tools that clone old fobs in seconds. The HID reader authenticates the card and hands the panel a standard Wiegand read, so the panel needs nothing special — the building simply gets credentials that stay unique.

This flexibility runs both ways on upgrades. Net2 boards can go in behind readers a building already has, or the readers can be swapped later without touching the panels.

Cards and fobs only — and where that is a feature

Net2 Plus does not do mobile credentials. There is no app and no Bluetooth: residents and staff carry a card or a fob, and keypad doors can require a PIN. We say this up front because it is the platform’s main trade-off, and for some buildings it is disqualifying.

For others it is the point. Nothing to install on anyone’s phone, no resident app to support, no cloud account per person — a fob works the same for every resident and every phone model, including people who do not carry a smartphone at all. Buildings that want phone-first entry should look at the Brivo ACS300 and the cloud platform behind it; we install both systems and will say directly which one fits yours.

Net2 software: one Windows machine, zero subscriptions

The system is managed through Net2 software on a Windows PC in the building — that is the one piece of infrastructure this platform asks for. In return, everything stays yours: the user database, the event history and the schedules live on site rather than in someone’s cloud, and the software carries no license fee, no per-door charge and no monthly bill. The hardware is bought once, and that is the end of the spending.

It also stays out of the way. Updates are free, optional and infrequent — we see sites still running the same Net2 version we installed years ago. Capacity is generous for its class: up to 50,000 users, 250 access levels and 64 time zones per system, more granularity than most commercial buildings ever configure. When we hand over a Net2 system, the manager gets a tool they will actually use, not a maintenance obligation.

Common questions about the Net2 Plus

Can Net2 Plus use HID or Brivo readers we already have on the doors?

Usually, yes. The board accepts Wiegand readers with 26-bit and custom formats up to 50 bits, so HID and Brivo readers wired in Wiegand mode connect directly. We check the exact output format on site before promising a clean swap.

Does Net2 work with phones as credentials?

No. Credentials are cards, fobs and PIN codes — there is no mobile app for the door. Buildings that want phone-based entry should look at a cloud platform like Brivo; Net2’s trade-off is local control and zero subscriptions.

What does the system cost per month?

Nothing goes to Paxton. The Net2 software has no license fee and no per-door or per-user charge, so after the one-time hardware purchase the ongoing costs are electricity, the Windows PC it runs on and any service contract you choose.

How do we add doors later?

One board per door. A new Net2 Plus joins the system over an RS485 daisy chain from an existing panel, so most added doors need a two-wire run rather than a new network drop. The platform supports up to 200 networked units — far beyond a typical building.

What happens if the office PC or the network goes down?

Doors keep working. Each board makes access decisions locally, stores 2,500+ events while offline and syncs back to the server when the connection returns. Data on the board survives a total power loss for up to 30 days.

Which version of the board should we buy?

The bare PCB (682-493-US) fits an enclosure that already exists.
