Networking, switches and Wi-Fi for security systems
Cameras, access control panels and intercoms are only as reliable as the network behind them. We design and deploy managed switches, PoE and Wi-Fi specifically for security and low-voltage systems in Chicago North Shore properties.
Why networking matters so much for security
Many “mystery issues” with cameras and access control turn out to be basic network problems: under-sized PoE switches, cheap routers, loops, unmanaged VLANs or Wi-Fi-only links where a cable was needed. Our goal is to make the network the most boring part of your system – stable and predictable.
What we typically do on a project
- Switch and PoE design. Choosing switches with enough PoE power and ports for all cameras, controllers and intercoms, with room for growth.
- Segmentation and security. Separating security devices from guest Wi-Fi and office networks where appropriate, using VLANs and proper routing.
- Clean cabling and patching. Labelled runs, patch panels and racks so future work is simple instead of a tangle.
- Remote access for management. Setting up safe, reliable remote access so systems can be maintained without guesswork.
Good networking for:
- Single-family homes. Stable PoE for a handful of cameras, plus Wi-Fi that covers the whole home and any detached garage.
- Small offices and retail. Separate networks for POS, guests and security devices so one issue does not take everything down.
- Multifamily and HOAs. Backbone switches, properly powered PoE for all cameras and panels, and clearly documented racks for future upgrades.
When we design or upgrade a security system, we always check the network first. If you already have cameras or access control that “randomly” go offline, starting with the network is usually the fastest way to make everything stable again.
