Product overview and installer notes
The Brivo ACS300 is a two-door cloud access control panel managed entirely through Brivo Access, powered by 12V DC or PoE. On paper it is the smaller of the two Brivo door controllers we install; in the field it is the panel we reach for when one more door — a garage, a gate, a side entrance — needs to join a system that already exists. The notes below cover power, Wi-Fi behavior, offline operation, readers and where the ACS6000 makes more sense — all of it from installing and servicing these panels around Chicago.

Why we don’t call it a small-building controller
Brivo’s own materials and most dealer sites file the ACS300 under small and mid-size systems. In the field the split does not work that way. Most of the ACS300 panels we install go into buildings that already run Brivo — sometimes a handful of doors on the account, sometimes several dozen — because someone finally wants the garage on the far side of the property, a vehicle gate or a service entrance in another wing brought into the same system.
Wiring that remote door back to the main panel across a building is expensive and sometimes plain impossible. Dropping an ACS300 next to the door and letting it join the account over the network is quick and clean — and the same logic covers a whole separate location, since the panel only needs internet to sit on the same account. The resident never learns how the doors are physically connected — they just see one more door in the same app, with the same fob and the same audit trail. Most of our access control installs in Chicago use the panel exactly this way.
Power: 12V DC, PoE, and the built-in lock output
The panel takes 12V DC or PoE — whichever is easier to bring to that corner of the building. On PoE it rides the same cable as the data, which at remote doors often means one cable run, period.
A small detail that saves money on nearly every quote: the board can power the electric strike or maglock directly with 12V. Flip the switch on the board to enable the lock output, and the separate lock power supply disappears from the parts list — at hard-to-reach doors that is one less box on the wall.
What the board does not have is a battery. If a door has to keep working through an outage, we feed the panel from a separate 12V UPS with its own battery — see our power and protection gear — instead of hoping the controller copes on its own. EOL resistors ship in the box too, so the wiring to the door contact and exit device can be supervised; on any opening where a cut wire or tampering actually matters, we use them.
Ethernet first, Wi-Fi as the safety net
Ethernet is the primary connection. Wi-Fi is on board as well, and it plays two roles: the main link where pulling cable is unrealistic, or a fallback that switches on automatically the moment the wired connection to Brivo’s servers drops. For a controller sitting in a detached garage, that failover has saved us more than one truck roll.
One planning note — the radio is 2.4 GHz only, no 5 GHz. In a concrete garage 2.4 is usually the band that survives anyway, but it still means checking coverage at the mounting spot before relying on it. If the building network itself needs work first, we handle that side too.
Two LEDs on the panel show power and the Brivo cloud connection. It sounds trivial until a 6 pm service call: one glance tells you whether the panel is even talking to Brivo before anyone opens a laptop.
The subscription question, and what happens offline
No way around it: the ACS300 runs only with an active Brivo Access subscription. Without one the panel does nothing. That is the platform’s model — credentials, schedules and events live in Brivo’s cloud, which is also why a property manager can run forty doors from a phone.
Losing internet is a different story from losing the subscription. Offline, the panel keeps opening doors for fobs and PIN codes it has already synced, so day-to-day entry does not stop. What pauses is everything that needs the cloud live: remote door release, real-time events, credential changes. Those functions resume once the connection returns.
Readers: Wiegand, OSDP, vehicle tags and phones
Readers connect over Wiegand or OSDP, so the panel is not tied to Brivo’s own readers. We have hung plenty of third-party hardware on these boards, including long-range RFID readers that pick up windshield tags at garage entries and vehicle gates — the standard setup in our HOA projects, where cars roll in on a tag and the exit side needs nothing more than a motion sensor.
That said, genuine Brivo readers — the B-BSSF-B single-gang or the slim B-BSPMF-B mullion — are the ones that enable NFC entry from a phone and the Bluetooth side of Brivo Mobile Pass, with no extra hardware involved. For residents who lose fobs twice a year, the phone credential alone is worth it.
Installation notes: indoor only, plus the spare I/O
The enclosure is indoor-only, with no weather rating at all. For a gate pedestal or an unheated outdoor wall we mount the panel inside its own sealed enclosure — skipping that step is how these boards die young.
The board also carries a number of spare inputs and AUX relay outputs, which cover the odd jobs that come up on most projects: a request-to-exit button, an elevator interlock, a tie-in to the alarm panel, an opening that needs different behavior after hours.
ACS300 or ACS6000 — the only line that matters
The comparison is short. The ACS300 tops out at two door channels and takes no expansion boards; the ACS6000 main board also starts at two doors, then grows with expansion boards into much larger systems. Feature-wise the two behave almost identically — the cloud, the credentials and the rules do not change between them.
So the choice is not really “small building or big building”. Nobody installs an ACS6000 for a door or two, and nobody should re-pipe a building just to avoid adding a second ACS300. Door count and where the wiring can physically go decide the model — the features are the same either way. When in doubt, we walk the property first — that is what a site visit is for.
Common questions about the ACS300
How much does the Brivo ACS300 cost?
The panel itself (part number B-ACS300-E-B) lists at $1,265 MSRP. The installed price depends on the door hardware, the wiring path and whether the lock runs off the board or its own supply, so we quote per project. The Brivo Access subscription is billed separately.
Does the ACS300 work without internet?
Yes, for everyday entry: fobs and PIN codes already synced to the panel keep working, so people still get through the door. Remote release, live events and credential changes wait until the connection returns. The subscription requirement is separate — without an active Brivo plan the panel will not run at all.
Does it have battery backup?
No, there is no battery on the board. When a door needs to ride through an outage, we power the panel from a separate 12V UPS with its own battery.
Can it power the door lock directly?
Yes. The board has a 12V lock output enabled by a switch on the board, which usually removes the separate lock power supply from the design.
Can I install it outdoors?
Not as-is — the unit is indoor-only with no weatherproofing. Outdoors it goes inside its own sealed enclosure.
Which readers work with it?
Anything speaking Wiegand or OSDP, including third-party readers and long-range vehicle tag readers for garages and gates. Genuine Brivo readers add NFC phone entry and Bluetooth features on top.
